New CNATT learning site established at Point Mugu

POINT MUGU, Calif. (NNS) -- The Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) established its 28th learning site under the CNATT umbrella during a ceremony April 18 onboard Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) at Point Mugu, California.
CNATT Commanding Officer Capt. Eric Simon provided remarks for the ceremony, which marked both the official establishment of the CNATT Detachment Point Mugu and the opening of a new state-of-the-art schoolhouse. The school will provide maintenance training on the MQ-4C Triton Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS).
"The CNATT Detachment Point Mugu staff are on the ground floor of an exciting and new innovation which is going to change the way the U.S. Navy can perform aviation surveillance missions," said Simon. "The way forward for this program is through the CNATT Detachment Point Mugu dedicated professionals who will train the Sailors who will deploy and maintain the MQ-4C Triton in areas around the world."
The MQ-4C Triton UAS is designed to provide a continuous source of information on a maritime battle space environment for intelligence preparation. In a secondary role, the MQ-4C Triton can be used alone or in conjunction with other assets to respond to theater-level operational or national strategic tasking.
According to CNATT Det Point Mugu officer-in-charge Lt. Cmdr. George Tsukatos, the new detachment is the only academic maintenance training facility specifically designed for the MQ-4C Triton. The facility will provide training on airframe, automatic logistics environment, avionics, electrical systems, fiber optics and wire connector repair, ground maintenance vehicle operator, propulsion, and system networks. Classes range in length from three to five months.
"We're getting Sailors from several aviation platforms and rates to train on this," said Tsukatos. It's exciting to see the energy our Sailors have to learn the Navy's newest platform."
Following the ceremony, Senior Chief Aviation Electronics Technician Duane Plymel and Aviation Electrician's Mate 2nd Class Jason Knight, cut a ceremonial ribbon to officially open the facility.
"We're going to teach the Sailors all about this aircraft, from the wings to the engines, to its complex avionics systems," Tsukatos said. "Like the other CNATT schoolhouses around the world, we're aiming to produce the highest quality of aviation maintainers in the fleet."
An annual student throughput of 200 to 250 students is expected.
"Since we are a new detachment, our staff has the extreme challenge of learning a brand new platform, becoming instructor qualified and also standing up Navy programs," said Tsukatos. "Thankfully we're blessed with outstanding Sailors and I'm confident we'll provide a great product to Triton squadrons."
CNATT Detachment Point Mugu trains Sailors in the organizational level maintenance for the MQ-4C aircraft and associated mission control systems across the fleet.
